After over 30 years as a therapist and clinical supervisor in hospitals, clinics, and private practice, it is clearer to me than ever that successful therapy is all about the relationship. Going into therapy is a courageous decision, often fraught with anxiety about what to expect. I do not expect my clients to share difficult thoughts and feelings until and unless they feel safe, understood and not judged, allowing for the essential therapeutic element: trust. My clients know that I will never betray their trust in our alliance. It has always been my professional mantra, and it always will be.
