Sometimes it feels like the world conspires against our authenticity. We often face pressure to be someone we’re not, or to paper over our complex identities for others’ comfort and ease of understanding. I was born in Austin, Texas to a Caucasian mother and African-American father before I was adopted by my Jewish parents at 2 days old. I faced judgement and pressure to choose binary race and class identities, whether they suited me or not. Navigating these pressures helped me deepen my empathy for others, my curiosity about other people, and a sensitivity to anyone who feels unheard, disregarded, or misunderstood.
