As a queer Black woman and eldest daughter, I knew early on that there were high expectations for me and I carried a heavy burden to be perfect and presentable. I sacrificed parts of me in order to be there for others and show up in a way that fit my family and society’s standards. Dealing with this grief and emotional strain starts with processing the guilt and shame of giving yourself grace and priority. Then we identify strategies to challenge the status quo and offer space to examine societal truths while reconnecting and discovering yourself.
