Bob Dylan once claimed that “chaos is a friend of mine” while Albert Einstein posited that “energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from one form to another.” I view trauma symptoms (depression, anxiety, etc.) as energies that descend upon people due to stress rather than originating from within. We can develop relationships with trauma symptoms to transform them into growth, security and happiness. The Japanese have a saying, "hendoku iyaku," which means changing poison into medicine. My approach with a client is to use the experience of suffering as a springboard to create the best, most meaningful life.
