When I worked in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, I made it a point to meet with patients before reading their chart. As a clinical supervisor of graduate-level social work students, I emphasized the importance of listening without the cloud of a diagnosis and repeated histories. Emotions need to be heard, whether in the form of fierce opinions or protective language. This can happen, in conversation, if the therapist is able to shed or expose known competing biases.
