Survivors of trauma sometimes blame themselves unjustly, and carry a lot of shame, which contributes to the debilitating effects of depression, anxiety, and dissociation, hallmarks of PTSD. When I educate clients about the neurobiology of trauma, e.g. the science underlying triggers and flashbacks, the shame and self-blame with which they often struggle is alleviated. My goals are to help clients feel compassion for themselves, to forgive themselves for things may have had to do to survive, to recognize their strengths in having survived, and to re-integrate and reclaim those parts of themselves they had to exile in order to do so.
