I have been licensed as a Professional Counselor in Alabama since 1992 and a Clinical Fellow of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy since 1991. My Family Systems training focused on growth and health rather than on pathology and dysfunction. From a developmental perspective, dysfunction is a predictable consequence of growth. As children advance from crawling to standing and walking, they are unsteady, awkward, and are "dysfunctional" for a time. In the same way, transitional periods in the life cycle of families and individuals can be difficult. Depression, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict are often seen at these times and counseling can be helpful.
