When I meet someone who has experienced real challenges in life, I don't shake my head, I'm usually nodding, because I really do get it. I actively listen to what the person is saying, and what is underneath what they aren't saying. I create a space where the person can feel safe in telling me whatever they've wanted to say but haven't felt that they could. How? By letting the person know that I see them.
