The swift current of modern mothering begins at the wanting. We are shuffled between appointments, full of directives; we are drowned out with advice from family and friends; we’re captivated by influencers; we buy books and listen to podcasts… slowly we are losing our voice. Gratefully the baby arrives, but it’s more noise — crying, instructions, tasks, and more advice. On top of that comes interrupted sleep, a transformed body, mood shifts, and a partner that seems out of reach… now we’re alone on an island we don’t recognize. We look around wondering to ourselves: how can this feel so hard when it’s the life I’ve longed for?
