I approach counseling with the understanding that we are biologically wired for connection. For many people mental health is compromised as our need for connection and meaning in our environment conflicts with cultural imperatives of independence and productivity. I view symptoms of distress as acts of resistance, not individual failings. For many, these acts of resistance result from injuries of marginalization and disconnection. I support clients to explore this resistance in the context of their current environment (friends, family, community). I work with clients from a place of empowerment, not pathology.
