Symptoms might point to our past, to the core conflicts which set limits on personal growth, but they're also a source of very real distress and difficulty in the present. I strive to balance analytic listening—equally for what isn’t as for what is said—with clinical pragmatism in pursuing treatment goals with a sense of urgency, while never foreclosing on opportunities for exploration. I use the breadth of skills at my disposal to attenuate, but not altogether dispense with, anxieties that speak to deeper, persistent issues which keep patients from flourishing or from feeling, and being, more fully themselves.
