As human beings, we have needs for both belonging and autonomy, attachment and freedom—which in adult life, often seem thwarted. We want to be heard and understood. As a counselor, my job is to listen, offer understanding, or direction where possible, and of course hope. When we have become overburdened with the weight of whatever is NOT working in our lives, we often long for someone we can tell our truth to...and someone who will strive to tell us the truth non-judgementally. This dialogue is “counseling” at its best.
