Joseph Campbell once spoke about the "hero's journey." A hero (sorry, usually a male) is given the instructions to go through the cave, conquer demons along the way, and come out on the other side into the light to find happiness. This is also the journey of therapy. We have to take our fears into our power and go into that "cave" of the unknown, to fight the demons, and to come out into the light. Existentially, we are "thrown" into the world and make choices and hang onto experiences that help us make sense of the world. I was also Clinical Director & Clinical supervisor for recovery centers in Long Beach and Orange County.
