I grew up in Jamaica with my mother and grandmother, and I remember witnessing them offering informal social work and therapy to many persons in need within our community. They were the kind of people others turned to for assistance, resources, advice, a listening ear, and a dose of reality. Their genuine concern and openness taught me therapy doesn't begin in an office; it starts with authentic human connection. I learned that it is important to understand our clients' diverse backgrounds so they can find a sanctuary where respect, honesty, and professionalism reign.
