Intercultural relationships often pop-up while traveling the globe and looking for excitement and romance. That is how my husband and I stumbled into our intercultural marriage some 37 years ago..... and stumble we definitely did. It is the differences that are so attractive that can become so problematic as time goes on. We had no common language between us and knew no one who believed our marriage stood a chance of survival. The children quickly came and reality hit hard! 26 yrs in MH and nothing in the field has felt so strenuous, exhilarating and worthwhile as couples therapy. Couples Therapy Goals 1) move the couple towards secure functioning which involves: Fairness, Justice, Sensitivity, Collaboration, Cooperation, Shared Power, Shared Purpose/Vision, Shared principles of Governance 2) increase ability to be present & attuned to their partner 3) enhance understanding behind the behaviors of their partner 4) recognize memories.
