For over three decades it has been my extraordinary privilege to hear the life stories of individuals who have engaged with me in the work of therapy. These unique stories, whether marked by suffering and despair, joy and happiness, were always about resilience and survival, and have taught me well the therapeutic value of narrative. This kind of listening is a partnership, a collaborative effort that is reflected in my clinical approach. I tell my social work students at Columbia that the most critically important tool they have is their ears.
