I believe humans are born with natural instincts for belonging, connection, and communion—across friendships, family, and intimate relationships. Life’s experiences, culture, and belief systems shape how those instincts develop, and pain or disruption along the way can undermine our capacity to give and receive love. When coping strategies become short-term fixes, they often produce longer-term consequences that make connection feel unsafe or confusing.
