Finding the right counselor can be a difficult task. Therapists are a lot like shoes, there are so many to choose from. Some will fit you and some won’t, but once you find the pair that fits just right, then you can run faster than ever before. That is why it is helpful to use the first few sessions to “try on” the therapeutic fit with a new counselor and see how it feels. In my office, the first few sessions I focus on trying to understand more of your story and where you’re at, then to assess together how therapy can be most helpful so we make sure you’re getting what you’re looking for out of therapy.
