The people who I work with often come to therapy after a change in their life has led them to question how they can overcome difficult situations and understand their decisions in order to live a more meaningful life and improve their relationships to self and others. Transitions such as starting college, having a child, losing a loved one, or ending a relationship are often events that cause a shift in understanding of ourselves and our worlds. Expectations about how life should be may not fit our reality, or old patterns or ways of coping that may have previously been effective become problematic.
