My name is Scott Gardner. I am a Licensed Addiction Counselor and member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). I provide counseling to help people overcome addiction and the sources of distress that led to the addiction. It is natural to feel stuck in mixed emotions when thinking about changing behaviors. People may see the substances they use as helpers, and it is normal to grieve the loss of those helpers when trying to make a change. There may be times when a person will sacrifice the next five years to survive the next five minutes. Often, people do not feel as if anyone truly understands them.
