About

People seek therapy when their Plan A breaks down. We each have a Plan A: it's everything we learn as kids about life and how to cope with it. We learn it mainly from our families and mainly unconsciously, and it works well enough for a while. But eventually we move out into a larger emotional world and that's when Plan A starts to fail. Anxiety, depression, addictions and relationship problems are symptoms of this failure. Sure, we want relief from these symptoms. But what we really need is a healthier Plan B. My job is to help you create one. My focus is the idea of control, the secret cause of most emotional problems. My book ("Monkeytraps: Why Everybody Tries to Control Everything and How We Can Stop") describes how overcontrolling our feelings makes us emotionally ill, overcontrolling relationships damages and destroys them, and overcontrolling life in general bankrupts us spiritually.
