In some important ways, psychotherapy is a lot like gardening. Even a small plot will add beauty and harmony to life, and the process of gardening is just as rewarding as the size of the crop. Generally, deeper tilling leads to better results: roots reach deeper into sources of nurturance, and are better protected from the stresses of heat, cold and drought. In a crisis, chemical treatments may be helpful, but be cautious: they may reduce the garden's natural resilience and carry the risk of dependence; they should be used judiciously and withdrawn as soon as possible.
