I am a Certified Child-Centered Play Therapist. In the modality that I provide we believe that children are not cognitive/have abstract reasoning, but that they live in their emotions. It is through the toys/games and relationship with the therapist that they are able to process the things that they are struggling with in their lives. The average length of play therapy is 40 weeks and the children during that time build increased emotional regulation, increased emotional vocabulary, increased self-esteem/confidence among many other strengths. Through play therapy the child transforms internally, not externally. This is the key.
