After practicing, studying and teaching psychotherapy for 40 years at the UC San Diego Department of Psychiatry I have integrated many different approaches to helping my patients. The most important aspect of psychotherapy is the relationship formed through an empathic understanding of the core issues and what caused them followed by a plan of action. Therapy is a collaborative process of discovery. Change comes about through understanding oneself better, learning new skills and effective ways of communicating with others. Each person's journey is unique.
