There is much to be said of the idea that a therapist should be a “good fit.” If you don’t feel there is a connection to build on and lessons to be learned, there is no harm in stating that truth and moving on. I’ve worked with people for a few months and some for many years. It’s important to feel you are getting something from your therapy. Therapeutic relationships perform the best when both therapist and client are mutually invested in the work. I deeply appreciate clients who commit and face the sometimes-painful work of therapy, knowing they are working toward a better day, a better life.
