A teacher once said to me as I was beginning my journey in school, "The relationship with the client must come first. The relationship creates the space in which the client will grow. All the tools and skills you will learn in school are secondary. Maintenance of the therapeutic relationship is the number one priority". This statement has become my guiding light as a clinician. When I work with a client, it is imperative that they feel heard, validated, and understood, before the work can begin. Finding the right therapist may take a few tries but keep going! Because finding the right one can make all the difference.
